Sensor Network

sensor networkSensor networks are groups of specialized transducers that have a communications infrastructure which is intended to record and monitor conditions at different locations. The commonly monitored parameters are humidity, pressure, temperature, wind speed and direction, illumination intensity, sound intensity, vibration intensity power-line voltage, pollutant levels, chemical concentrations as well as vital body functions.

A sensor network comprises multiple detection stations referred to as sensor nodes, every one of which is lightweight, small and extremely portable. Each sensor node is fitted with a transducer, transceiver, microcomputer and power source. The transducers generate electrical signals according to the sensed physical phenomena and effects. The microcomputer computes and stores the sensor’s output. The transceiver, which could be wireless or hard-wired, receives commands from the central computer and in turn transmits data to this computer. The power for every sensor node is taken from from a battery or from the electric utility. Potential uses of sensor networks are:

  • Industrial automation
  • Video surveillance
  • Smart and automated homes
  • Traffic monitoring
  • Monitoring of weather conditions
  • Medical device monitoring
  • Robot control
  • Air traffic control
